The Okumidori Cultivar (奥みどり)

Okumidori is a rare and highly regarded Japanese tea cultivar, cherished for its deep emerald green tone, refined umami, and naturally smooth, low-astringency profile. It offers a balanced taste with soft sweetness, and whisks into a fine, creamy foam. The presentation and taste of Okumidori make it especially suited for tea ceremonies and high-grade matcha, whether enjoyed as usucha or koicha.

Cultivating Okumidori demands precise climate and shading control to develop its signature color and flavor. Its late-maturing shoots are especially vulnerable to late spring frosts, making the harvest more delicate and dependent on skilled hands. With only around 5% of Japan’s total tea cultivation dedicated to this cultivar, Okumidori remains highly sought-after among premium tea producers and matcha connoisseurs.
